What is hybrid-d77?
Chimera Linux pairs a Linux kernel with a BSD
userland (FreeBSD’s chimerautils) and apk (the same package format as
Alpine, built through its own, unrelated cports/cbuild system). The
“hybrid” in the name is exactly that: a genuine hybrid of the BSD and Linux
worlds, not just a marketing word.
Named deliberately without “chimera” in it — unlike d77void, which stays permanently tied to Void’s own name, this one stays clear of the base distro’s name on purpose.
Two variants
Two ISOs from the same tree, on the same base (Chimera, dinit, no greeter, the same installer, welcome helper and app set) — only the session differs:

On niri, Utumno is the whole shell — bar, launcher, lock screen, power
menu, wallpaper picker, OSD — driven by keybinds through
qsd77. On either variant, the
keybinds are listed in ~/README.md, shown by h77-welcome’s “About” item.
Highlights
- Init is dinit, not systemd or runit.
- No greeter or display manager — a plain
gettylogin:prompt, with/etc/issuedocumenting the credentials (anon/chimera,root/chimera), straight into Sway or niri via.profile. - h77-welcome, a small
dialog(1)welcome helper autostarted on login: Install, Update and About from one menu. - A patched
chimera-installer(h77-installer) with real Groups/Services checklists, disk Partition/Filesystems, Network and Keymap steps — none of which exist in the stock installer. - Mocinha, a GTK3 graphical installer, ships alongside it as an experimental second install method (work in progress).
- h77-update keeps the
h77-*packages current on an installed system, straight from the project’s GitHub Release. - The system identifies itself as hybrid-d77 in
/etc/os-release, with Chimera kept inID_LIKEfor compatibility.
Status
The sway variant is confirmed working end to end on real hardware
(not just a VM), including the destructive disk-partitioning path: live
boot → doas h77-installer → Network → Keymap → Partition (cfdisk) →
Filesystems → SystemRoot → Kernel → Packages → Bootloader → Install, into
a working Sway/Waybar desktop.
The niri variant is newer: all its packages build and install
cleanly, its config passes niri validate, and its ISO builds end to
end, but it hasn’t been booted on real hardware yet.

the files page.
The h77-* packages themselves are built by CI and published separately,
as GitHub Releases.
