Where things are configured
Your configuration is in your home
The configuration ships in the image as a template, in /etc/skel. When a
user is created, the template is copied into that user’s home, and from then
on the copy in your home is the one that counts:
| What | Where |
|---|---|
| the compositor | ~/.config/sway/ or ~/.config/niri/, see your variant’s page |
| the bar (Sway) | ~/.config/waybar/ |
| notifications (SwayNotificationCenter) | ~/.config/swaync/ |
| fuzzel launcher | ~/.config/fuzzel/fuzzel.ini |
| terminal (foot) | ~/.config/foot/foot.ini |
| Qt theme | ~/.config/qt6ct/ and ~/.config/Kvantum/ |
| GTK theme | ~/.config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini, ~/.config/gtk-4.0/settings.ini |
| Neovim (LazyVim) | ~/.config/nvim/ |
| the default wallpaper | ~/.config/backgrounds/d77.png |
| the text shown by h77-welcome’s About | ~/README.md |
Editing a file in /etc/skel changes nothing for users that already exist;
it only affects users created afterwards. To start over with a variant’s
original file, copy it from /etc/skel into your home again, for example:
cp /etc/skel/.config/sway/config ~/.config/sway/config
Starting the session
There is no login screen. ~/.profile starts the session when you log in on
the first console (tty1): exec sway or exec niri. Logging in on another
console gives a plain shell. To stop the session from starting by itself,
remove those lines from ~/.profile.
h77-welcome at login
While this file exists, h77-welcome opens at each login:
| Variant | File |
|---|---|
| Sway | ~/.config/sway/autostart.d/h77-welcome.conf |
| niri | ~/.config/niri/h77-welcome.autostart |
Don’t show this again deletes it. To bring the autostart back, copy the
file again from /etc/skel.
Keyboard layout
The installer’s Keymap step sets the layout of the text console only. Sway and niri take it from their own configuration file, which leaves it empty (US layout). For example, a Portuguese layout:
| Compositor | Setting |
|---|---|
| Sway | xkb_layout "pt" in the input type:keyboard block of ~/.config/sway/config |
| niri | layout "pt" in the xkb block of ~/.config/niri/config.kdl |
Wallpaper
| Variant | How |
|---|---|
| Sway | the output * bg ~/.config/backgrounds/d77.png fill line in ~/.config/sway/config |
| niri | Utumno’s wallpaper picker, Super + Y, with the images in ~/Wallpaper/ |
Power menu
On Sway, fuzzel-power-menu offers Suspend, Logout, Reboot and Shutdown;
Reboot and Shutdown ask for confirmation. On niri, Utumno has its own
power menu. Both use loginctl.
Mounting disks
USB sticks and other disks are mounted by themselves by udiskie, started
with the session, for users in the storage group (the installer adds your
user to it).
Night light
The Sway variant starts wlsunset with the location of Porto, Portugal
(latitude 41.6, longitude −8.62), to warm the screen colours at night.
Change the numbers in the exec wlsunset line of ~/.config/sway/config
to your own location. The weather on the bar (~/.config/waybar/wittr.sh)
uses the same coordinates. The niri variant has no night light.
